New Adventure and Opportunity in South Africa
I, along with 2 others, are traveling to South Africa from Jan 21 til Feb 1, 2008, to work with four different groups of nurses and other health care givers and update them on phlebotomy skills, proper patient identification and infection control. I welcome comments and questions from interested viewers/visitors and especially my students at LSUA.

The contribution you and your colleagues are making to this culture is magnanamous. The greatest gift we as human beings can give one-another is to share a part of ourselves that will in some way be beneficial to someone else. The knowledge your are instilling in your students abroad will serve as a foundation for future generations to come. All of you will be in my thoughts and prayers. Dasina Young
Thank you for your commnents. Each phlebotomy training is 2 1/2 days. We completed our second training this afternoon (Fri). Our participants are employed as nurses and lab professionals and are expected to draw blood specimens after observing another worker. They are all eager to learn more and ask terrific questions. After our closing ceremony, both groups sang to us as their way of thanking us for our time to help them. It was emotional for all of us. In this area and hospital approximately 90% of the patients have HIV/AIDS and a large % contract TB- especially the MDR-TB and the XDR-TB. Getting to a helth care facility can be a huge problem and then they must wait all day to see the doctor, get lab and x-rays completed and then see the doctor for a diagnosis and medicines.
