Hello!! My first week of clinical was last week and can I just tell you that it was emotional whirlwind!! I was so nervous while I was there that I was shaking while I was preparing the client for a blood draw. The second day was the day that really got me all worked up because I kept missing the vein and we were so busy so I felt the pressure to be fast and accurate!!! The lady who was over me pulled me aside and told me to relax and be comfortable and not to worry I will get it and that there will be some misses. I also called Mrs Cathy and she helped calm my nerves too. So after I talked to everyone, I calmed down and told myself I could do it and once I calmed down I started doing pretty good!!! I will be positive for next week and hopefully have nothing but good news next week!!
Good job Kandace! The first 2 weeks on any new job offers many challenges and new experiences. couple that with your new phlebotomy skills and the first 2 weeks are pretty stressful- but after that you will get in the swing of phlebotomy and begin enjoying your clinical time.
Well i is week 4 into the program clinicals. I am doing pretty well and I am only getting better. I am still a bit shy when I cannot feel the vein and I am still getting used to drawing blood out of the vein in the top of the hands. I have done it maybe about 3 times and I missed once, got it once and blow a vein once. But I count that as a miss!! A lot of people have been very nice about if I miss, letting me try again.
Here is a funny story. This lady came into the lab and she had a needle phobia. When I put the tourniquet on she was shaking. I did not feel comfortable drawing her blood because it was my second or third week in clinicals. So I called one of the phlebotomists into the room to draw her blood and she started screaming when she was drawing her blood. I know we all have to get used to that because we will encounter but I was sure glad it was not me. I know I would have been the one to PASS out!!
there was also this guy who came in and the first thing he said when he put his arm out is that he has a seizure everytime her gives blood and when I pulled up his sleeve, his arm was bruised from the last time he had blood drawn. Well the skilled phlebotomist kept him talking and asking him questions and would not let him look at it. Guess what!! He did not pass out and he said that was the first time ever. I am learning a lot of new things!!!
