Week 1 in Windhoek, Namibia

There were 30 laboratory managers, QA/QC managers attending the Basic Laboratory Operations Training (BLOT) at Heja Game Lodge just outside of Windhoek, Namibia. Each day we covered a different component related to laboratory reporting accurate and reliable patient test results. In this picture, we are discussing Levey Jennings charts, how to construct them and how to interpret results to ensure control materials are within 2 SD range of the mean.

I didn't realize how many people from around the world travel to these events. I wish I could understand more about the program.

IFBLS is an international conference that meets every other year. India hosted the last conference in 2008. This year, Nairobi is the host. Medical Technologists from all countries submit abstract proposals to present their reseach to ~800 of their colleagues. Maybe about 80 proposals are accepted for presentation. For example,Oslo, Norway presented today on research they did using a non-invasive quick test (new on the market) instead of invasive colonoscopy to diagnosis IBS. This quick and inexpensive test can differentiate between Irritable Bowel Syndrome and Irritable Bowel Disease - treatment options are very different for each of these conditions.
Another example is monitoring hemoglobin and hematocrit values in children and pregnant women infected with malaria/ these patients have a decreased susceptibity to malaria b/c their red blood cells are microcytic and make it more difficult for the parasite to gain access into the RBC. Additionally, people with alpha-Thalasemia have a lower risk for malaria because of the shape of their RBCs. So, all participants attend sessions and then ask questions about the topic. I hope this helps answer your question.
Like a huge car expo- you will see all types of new cars on the market and find out what they do different and why they are the best, etc...- only this convention concerns lab testing equipment and research!!

Sometimes I dance, alone, to music no-one can hear but me. When I dance I feel the beat of the earth’s own heart rise through my feet and legs, through my loins and belly and into my chest, until my own heart beats in time with the earth’s. Then I wonder if you feel it too, beneath that portion of the earth’s crust where you stand, or walk, or lie, or dance too. Because always, when I’m dancing, I’m dancing with you.
